Our Art Project
Last week, we all learnt how to make a sun dial. First we had to get all of the materials we needed to make a sun dial. Then we had to colour in parts of our sun dials and after we coloured we had to cut out some parts. Once we had cut everything out we had to go to Miss Gierach to help us to assemble our sun dials.
We haven't been able to test our sun dials yet because of the cloudy and wet weather. We hope that we will be able to take them outside and test them sometime next week.
We were making sun dials because we were learning about how sun dials work and how they were used to tell time in the olden days. The sun made a shadow and people were able to work out the time by looking at the shadow on the sun dial. Some people think that sun dials aren't as good as normal clocks because you can't use them at night time. Another reason is that when clouds block the sun, there is no shadow on the sun dial. It is also hard to take a sun dial with you when you go for a walk. Sun dials are a bit tricky to tell the time on unless you have been shown the correct way to read a sun dial.
Some other people think sun dial are great because clocks can show the wrong time a lot of the time, but the sun will always tell you the right time. They are also good because sun dials might be more interesting than using a clock. Some clocks are very noisy but sun dials are silent. Clocks batteries can run out, but the sun never runs out. A sun dial is not affected by rain like a clock could be if it got wet.
Would you rather use a clock or a sun dial to tell the time?
Would you like to make your own sun dial?
Have you ever used a sun dial?
